The Marine Technician Apprentice will work alongside senior technicians to learn all facets of being a Marine Technician. When the training is completed you will be able to perform quality maintenance and service and installations on all marine equipment, including small auxiliary engines (sailboats & generators) as well as main propulsion engines on larger yachts and all on-board related systems. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Investigate, troubleshoot, and diagnose all aspects of marine/yacht systems. Repair running gear/cutlass bearings; engine alignment/steering systems; hydraulic/plumbing systems; shaft seals service/installations. General maintenance of yachts Bilge cleaning Repower and rig vessels Annual services, oil changes/impellers/heat exchangers. Responsible for record-keeping and end-of-day reporting Some overtime, weekends, and holiday work may be required Education, Experience, Licensing Graduation from a technical school or six months of marine experience. You must have permanent authorization to work in the USA for any employer. No visa sponsorships are available. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of various types of vessels Computer literate Team player attitude with effective verbal communication skills needed to work with fellow employees, parts department, management, and occasionally conversing with the customer Detail oriented Self-starter with troubleshooting skills and a professional appearance Ability to follow directions in a professional manner Capable of operating and securing a vessel is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel Perform prolonged standing Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis Lift/push/pull a battery weighing 59 pounds without assistance on a regular basis Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps) to access vessels and vessel equipment Ability to work at heights above 12 feet, while working from a ladder, scaffolding, and/or lifts to access vessels and vessel equipment Able to work on ladders, scaffolding, and on top of the vessels while hauled out Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety lines, floatation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including heat, humidity, and sun Able to work in an environment where you are occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals Ability to enter small spaces, and openings, and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands Able to utilize adequate visual skills Able to work within an environment where the noise level is usually loud Ability to fully extend the arm or arms while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side, and reaching down with tools and/or equipment Ability to perceive attributes of an object/materials such as size, shape, temperature, and texture Observe all safety signs, notices and understand safety procedures, and attend safety meetings Close-Toe shoes are required in the entire service facility when walking outside the administration offices, as well as safety glasses and PPE Disclaimer The above information in this description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Diversified Yacht Services, Inc., the newest, most advanced, state-of-the-art yacht repair service facility in todays yachting world, needs a Marina Yard Worker to assist in cosmetically maintaining the vessels for our customers. A qualified Yard Worker will be a self-starter and a dedicated worker knowledgeable in the Marine and Boating Industry. The person should be flexible to fulfill the various tasks in the boat yard including, but not limited to the following: Pressure washing, media blasting, scraping, sanding, and applying paint to the bottoms of vessels and running gear Washing and drying customers vessels including polishing glass and waxing by hand or electric polisher. Vessel cleaning including: detailing and cleaning the interior of the vessels such as dusting, vacuuming, mopping, steam-cleaning carpets and upholstery, and cleaning heads, galley, and the engine room. Assisting with travel lift and forklift operations. Building maintenance as assigned. To be considered for this position, you must meet the following requirements: 6 months in a laborer role. Experience with marina yard work will make you a stronger candidate. Proven experience with hand and power tools. Knowledge of rigging and de-rigging of vessels and the proper allocation and inventory of parts. Valid Florida Drivers License with a clean driving record. An unsatisfactory driving record would contain infraction worse than minor traffic violations. Permanent authorization to work in the USA. No visa sponsorships are available. Capable of operating and securing a vessel will make you a stronger candidate. Having knowledge of rigging and de-ridding of vessels will make you a stronger candidate. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of detailing products that are appropriate for use on boats and can identify products and work with the Parts Department to obtain them. This person should be able to work unsupervised, have a professional appearance, and be a team player. Candidates applying for this position should have the verbal communication skills to work effectively with fellow employees, the Parts Department, management, and occasionally the customer. Effective written communication skills are also necessary to report the results of investigations and make recommendations to successfully complete repairs.
